In the spring of 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, Krista immediately jumped into the virtual space and created “Find Your Beat,” an educational initiative offering students educational videos and opportunities for little to no cost. To support these initiatives, In 2021 Krista was awarded a grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, and the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Highly devoted to percussion education in our schools, Krista has advised dozens of local middle and high school band directors. She has judged area competitions, hosted numerous clinics, and currently serves on staff as the percussion instructor at Sanderson High School, Ligon Middle School, and St. Timothy’s School. In 2018 she joined St. Timothy’s school at the NCMEA convention in Winston Salem, NC when they performed in exhibition. Then in 2019 Krista had the privilege of traveling as an advisor with the Ligon Middle School Jazz ensemble to the Midwest Convention in Chicago, IL. Krista maintains a diverse portfolio of skills; coaching orchestral youth for the Triangle Philharmonic Association while also training others for the field as a marching band instructor in the summer.
Krista attended Appalachian State University under a full scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Music Performance and a minor in Business. She studied under Dr. Robert Falvo, a graduate of The Manhattan School of Music, and W. Arnold Sykes. In 2001 Krista won the Concerto Competition Winner for the Hayes School of Music and was later invited to perform in the Honors Recital Series in 2002. During her time at Appalachian State University, Krista also played double seconds, tenor, and bass pans in the Steely Pan Steel Band, an advanced touring steel pan ensemble.
After college Krista worked for various arts organizations including The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Columbia Artists Management, Lincoln Center, and The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. While working for these organizations she continued to perform professionally in venues such as The Kennedy Center, the Rachel M. Schlesinger Arts Center, and the Wooly Mammoth Arts Center.
Krista’s focus and passion for teaching has led to the creation of KLS Percussion, a place to advance the art of percussion and create the musicians of tomorrow.
